Baseball Recap: Rio Hondo Has No Trouble Against Progreso

Rio Hondo won the last time they faced Progreso and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Bobcats blew past the Red Ants 12-3. The result was nothing new for the Bobcats, who have now won nine games by six runs or more so far this season.

Nathan Martinez made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March of 2025. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 1-for-1 with three stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. He has become a key player for Rio Hondo: the team is 5-1 when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 6-11 otherwise.

In other batting news, Noah Villalobos was excellent, going 1-for-2 with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2025.

Rio Hondo was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .444. They are 10-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

The win made it two in a row for Rio Hondo and bumps their season record up to 11-12. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 3 runs in those games. As for Progreso, their defeat was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-10.

Looking ahead, Rio Hondo will head out to challenge Raymondville at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Bobcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bearkats have averaged an impressive 6.6 runs per game this season. As for Progreso, they will welcome Santa Rosa at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Warriors have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.25 runs per game on average), something the Red Ants will no doubt try to take advantage of.
