The Fort Plain Hilltoppers will venture away from home to face off against the Schoharie Storm at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Schoharie took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Fort Plain, who comes in off a win.
Fort Plain's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Monday. They blew past Canajoharie 7-0.
Lainie McDuffee made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. McDuffee was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Daija Suits, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. Another player making a difference was Jordon Gomez, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Mayfield hit Schoharie with a four-run seventh inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Storm fell just short of the Panthers by a score of 6-5.
Kayla Hayes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and five unearned) runs on four hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in nine consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Schoharie saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Riley Lawyer, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run. Alaina Martin was another, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
Fort Plain's record now sits at 5-9. As for Schoharie, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-7.
Fort Plain suffered a grim 22-4 defeat to Schoharie when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Hilltoppers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
