The Poth Pirates will square off against the Southside Cardinals at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday.
Things were looking good for Poth after they put the first points on the board on Tuesday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Lytle by a score of 6-5.
Oliver Gray made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March of 2024. Caiden Gorzell was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Southside hadn't done well against McCollum recently (they were 1-7 in their previous eight matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Southside came out on top in a nail-biter against McCollum, sneaking past 10-8. That's two games straight that the Cardinals have won by exactly two runs.
Achillies Sepulveda made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Sepulveda was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Southside let Jeremy Huizar and Eddie Villazana run wild. Huizar scored a run while going 2-for-3, while Villazana scored a run while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabriel Martinez, who scored two runs while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
Southside hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as McCollum struck out ten times.
Poth's defeat was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 1-1. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.25 runs. As for Southside, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to a perfect 2-0.
Poth was able to grind out a solid victory over Southside in their previous matchup back in February of 2024, winning 7-4. Will Poth repeat their success, or does Southside have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
