The Platte Canyon Huskies will be playing at home against the Fort Lupton Bluedevils at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last game, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
Platte Canyon struggled with offensive rebounds last Thursday (Middle Park had eight more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Platte Canyon took a 39-21 bruising from Middle Park.
Platte Canyon's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Sydney Curtis, who scored ten points along with two steals, and Ily Hardey who scored seven points along with nine rebounds. That was a full 47.6% of Platte Canyon's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Caylie Lewis, who scored no points along with four steals.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Platte Canyon struggled to work together and finished the game with only two assists. That's the fewest assists they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Fort Lupton was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Thursday as they fell 42-37 to Arvada.
Despite their defeat, Fort Lupton saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Marely Gomez, who scored 13 points along with five steals, was perhaps the best of all. Gomez is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Zaylee Chavez, who scored nine points along with seven rebounds and five steals.
Platte Canyon's defeat dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Fort Lupton, their defeat was their seventh straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 3-7.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Platte Canyon have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 33.3 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Fort Lupton, though, as they've been averaging only 34.9 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
