Basketball Recap: Tyshon Nixon Key Part of a Team Effort in Wildkats Win

Willis hadn't done well against College Park recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Willis Wildkats secured an 80-75 W over the College Park Cavaliers. The victory almost wasn't to be: the Wildkats were down 64-47 in the third quarter.

Willis got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Tyshon Nixon out in front who posted 22 points in addition to eight steals and five rebounds. Those 22 points gave Nixon a new career-high. Jackson Day was another key player, going 5 for 8 on his way to 16 points along with six boards and three steals.

Willis smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive boards in four consecutive games.

College Park lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Ian Inman, who went 8 of 17 en route to 19 points in addition to five assists and three steals. The match was Inman's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Aiden Buckmon, who scored 16 points and three steals.

Willis has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a nice bump to their 17-9 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.5 points per game. As for College Park, with the loss, they broke their five-game winning streak and moved their record to 21-9.

Willis and College Park should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. Willis (ranked 339th) will meet New Caney (ranked 1013th) at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, College Park will challenge Caney Creek at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday up 943 places (128 vs. 1071).
