Basketball Recap: Maliyah Johnson Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat West Davidson

Lexington won the last time they faced West Davidson and things went their way on Tuesday too. The Lexington Yellowjackets took down the West Davidson Dragons 54-37. Given the Yellowjackets' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 148th, while the Dragons are ranked 333rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Lexington's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Maliyah Johnson, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds. Those 14 points gave Johnson a new career-high. Lily Ervin was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on nine points and 11 boards.

Lexington smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in three consecutive matches.

Lexington is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.2 points per game. As for West Davidson, the loss snapped their winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 7-11 record.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. It'll be a Battle of the Bugs the Lexington Yellowjackets face off against the Salisbury Hornets at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Salisbury will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Lexington surely won't give up without a fight. As for West Davidson, they will square off against North Rowan at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. West Davidson is facing North Rowan at the right time seeing as North Rowan is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
