It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact the Zapata Hawks can now relate to. They were the victim of a tough 62-36 loss at the hands of Calhoun on Friday. Zapata just can't catch a break and has now endured three losses in a row.
Despite the defeat, Zapata had strong showings from Lauro Guerra, who threw for 154 yards and three touchdowns while completing 73.7% of his passes, and Andres Gutierrez, who picked up 185 receiving yards and a touchdown. Gutierrez was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 60 yards.
Calhoun was led to victory by Alex Parker and Jayce Campos. Parker rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns on only eight carries, while Campos rushed for 168 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 9.9 yards per carry. Another player making a difference was Darrik Salinas, who gained 118 total yards and a touchdown.
Zapata's defeat dropped their record down to 6-5. As for Calhoun, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 7-4.
Zapata does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Calhoun will face off against Burnet at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Burnet is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
