2A/1A Northwest recap Oct. 23, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Surry Central, who took down 311th ranked North Stokes, 49-15. Colby Chilton threw for nine yards and ran for 200 yards in the win.
Mount Airy extended the longest winning streak in 2A/1A Northwest this week by beating South Stokes, 35-13. The victory was the ninth in a row for the Bears.
Blaze Acord was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 263 yards on 22 carries as North Surry fell to West Stokes. Teammate Shawn Dehart added to the ground attack by rushing for seven yards.
McNamara was the best wideout in the league this week as the Villains fell to the Wildcats. McNamara tallied four receptions for 113 yards. Thomas LaMuraglia helped Bishop McGuinness' passing attack out by catching four balls for 56 yards.
AUSTIN TAYLOR put up the best numbers through the air as Mount Airy bested the Sauras. He finished with a total of nine completions for 146 yards and three touchdowns. TAYLOR's favorite target this week was DARIUS GWYN, who caught five passes for 94 yards.
North Stokes' Garrett Wood and Matthew Hopkins have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 2A/1A Northwest in both passing and receiving yards. Wood has thrown for 2206 yards this season, while Hopkins, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 55 catches for 785 yards. The Greyhounds' Acord leads the league in rushing yards with 1879.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Kelly Holder's team takes on East Surry. The Bears are in first place, while the Cardinals are in fifth place.
The Golden Eagles moved up to 293 from 325 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Surry Central was able to make move up by beating North Stokes 49-15.
