The Hampton Hornets pushed their score all the way to 64 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 70-64 hit to the loss column at the hands of McDonough. Even though they lost, Hampton's still made a splash on offense and bumped their average scoring up to 50.3 points per game (they're now ranked -1th in scoring overall).
When it comes to explaining why Hampton lost, one person who can't be blamed is Jordan Townsend. Despite the final result, he scored 32 points. That was a full 50% of Hampton's points, marking the 11th time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mikel Garnett, who scored 14 points.
McDonough got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Keenan Gray out in front who scored 18 points along with three steals. Another player making a difference was Zion Greene, who scored 16 points along with two steals.
Hampton has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost six of their last seven games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-16 record this season. As for McDonough, they pushed their record up to 20-2 with that win, which was their 16th straight at home dating back to last season.
Hampton will head out on the road to challenge Mt. Zion at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Georgia (Mt. Zion is ranked 380th, while Hampton is ranked 370th). As for McDonough, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Pace Academy at 7:00 p.m. on January 27th. Pace Academy has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 595 points over their last nine matchups.
