The Columbiana Clippers made easy work of the Southeast Pirates on Thursday and carried off a 14-5 win. Considering the Clippers have won 17 matches by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Addison Brode and Caitlynn Pleska made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Brode tossed five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Meanwhile, Pleska tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances. At bat, Brode went 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Pleska got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Kyla Hogan and Maryn Hepler did most of the damage at the plate: Hogan went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs, while Hepler went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. That's the most hits Hogan has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Ella Dota, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs.
Columbiana was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .469. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .300 or higher in 17 consecutive contests.
Columbiana pushed their record up to 20-6 with the victory, which was their tenth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.8 runs over those games. As for Southeast, their loss dropped their record down to 16-7.
Coming up, Columbiana will venture away from home to challenge Maplewood at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Clippers 3.8, the Rockets 2.6) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Southeast, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against St. Vincent-St. Mary at 5:00 p.m. The Pirates' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Fighting Irish have averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season.
