The Spring Mills Cardinals are taking a road trip to square off against the Southern Fulton Indians at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Spring Mills is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.7 runs per game this season.
Spring Mills blew Pendleton County out of the water the last time the pair played, but on Saturday Pendleton County got their revenge. The Cardinals fell just short of the Wildcat by a score of 6-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Cardinals have suffered since April 26, 2024.
Taryn Close spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and five unearned) runs on two hits and racked up nine Ks.
At the plate, Spring Mills saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jocilyn Graham, who went 2-for-4 with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last match, Southern Fulton made sure to put some runs up on the board against McConnellsburg on Wednesday. The Indians were the clear victors by a 10-0 margin over the Spartans. The Indians haven't had any issues with the Spartans recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Not much got past Ava Beal, who gave up just three hits to keep McConnellsburg off the board. Beal has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Lakyin Hixson was a standout: she scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3. Brynley Schriever also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Spring Mills' loss dropped their record down to 10-5. As for Southern Fulton, their win bumped their record up to 3-5.
Saturday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Spring Mills hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .333. However, it's not like Southern Fulton struggles in that department as they've averaged .325. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
