The Brewer Patriots will venture away from home to take on the Douglas Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
On Friday, Brewer was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 23-19 to Boaz. While losing is never fun, the Patriots can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Alabama football rankings (they are ranked 205th, while the Pirates are ranked 102nd).
Despite the loss, Brewer had strong showings from Cole Drinkard, who threw for 168 yards and one touchdown while completing 73.3% of his passes, and Hunter Knighten, who picked up 92 receiving yards and one score. Cam Ballinger got in on the action as well, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Don't try to pin the team's loss on the defense: they kept the trenches locked down and allowed a mere 1.8 yards per carry. The team can thank Beau Yancey for the heroic effort on defense: he. Sadly, that's becoming something of a trend for Brewer; they were averaging 3.7yards per carry per game earlier this season, but in their last three contests they've fallen to only 2.8 per game.
Meanwhile, Douglas got their first taste of in-conference action on Friday and they started things off strong. They strolled past Sardis with points to spare, taking the game 35-21.
Brewer better keep an eye on Keilan Green. He was instrumental in Douglas' win, rushing for 175 yards and one TD while picking up 10.3 yards per carry. Green has become a key player for the Eagles: the team is undefeated when he posts at least 80 rushing yards, but 0-3 otherwise.
Douglas didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Layton Culbert, Baker Lyles, Isaiah Glidewell, and Carson Dowdey picked up one apiece. Dowdey is also crushing it when it comes to total tackles: he's made at least seven every time he's taken the field this season.
Brewer dropped their record down to 2-5 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home. As for Douglas, they now have a winning record of 4-3.
Brewer couldn't quite get it done against Douglas when the teams last played back in October of 2024 as they fell 34-26. Can the Patriots avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
