The Memorial Red Devils's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Monday after their fifth straight loss. They took a hard 64-45 fall against Garfield. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Memorial in their matchups with Garfield: they've now lost seven in a row.
Several Red Devils players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Angeliz Diaz, who scored seven points along with 12 rebounds and six assists. Diaz is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last ten games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Diamon Sims, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Even though they lost, Memorial were working as a unit and finished the game with 11 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Garfield found their leader in underclassman Mandy Cardinal, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 11 rebounds. That makes it three consecutive games in which Cardinal has scored at least a third of Garfield's points. Kaelyn Tasker was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with four steals.
Memorial's loss was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 2-13. As for Garfield, their win bumped their record up to 3-11.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Memorial on the road again on Thursday and play against Champion at 6:15 p.m. on January 25th. Champion presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Memorial in Ohio (Champion is ranked 266th, while Memorial is ranked 762nd). As for Garfield, they will head out on the road to face off against Liberty at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
