4A Region 2 recap Sept. 26, 2012
Lewisburg extended the longest winning streak in 4A Region 2 this week by beating Byhalia, 35-14. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Patriots.
Lewisburg moved up to 115 from 149 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Patriots were able to make the jump by beating the Indians 35-14.
North Pontotoc's dynamic duo of Trey Jolly and Greg Gambrel proved tough for Nettleton to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Jolly threw for 334 yards and four touchdowns and Gambrel had 105 yards receiving. Marcus Green helped North Pontotoc's passing attack out by catching five balls for 83 yards.
Xavier Morris was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 140 yards on 26 carries as Lewisburg topped the Tigers. Teammate Colton Freeman added to the ground attack by rushing for 44 yards.
North Pontotoc's Jolly and Green have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 4A Region 2 in both passing and receiving yards. Jolly has thrown for 1437 yards this season, while Green, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 29 catches for 519 yards. New Albany's Boston Newsome leads the league in rushing yards with 883.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Lewisburg takes on second place Lafayette. Last week, the Patriots topped Byhalia, while Lafayette defeated Pontotoc.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Commodores take on Lewisburg. Lafayette has allowed 53 points this season, while the Patriots have given up 67. Eric Robertson's team allowed 6 points last week as it topped the Warriors.
The Commodores suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after a 41-6 loss to the Commodores. Lafayette had been ranked 21st, but fell to 32 following the defeat.
