Basketball Recap: Benedictine Comes Up Short

Benedictine was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They had to suffer through a 76-44 loss at the hands of the Villa Angela-St. Joseph Vikings. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Bengals of the 79-63 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in January of 2024.

Despite the defeat, Benedictine saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Giovanni Ramos posted eight points and 12 rebounds. Those 12 rebounds set a new season-high mark for Ramos. Luke Carlton was another key player, putting up 12 points.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph had a senior duo take command as Antonio Brown dropped a double-double on 30 points and 15 boards and Sean Shenker went 8 of 14 on his way to 20 points and eight rebounds. With that strong performance, Brown is now averaging an impressive 8.1 boards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Jeremiah Martin, who put up nine points.

Benedictine's loss dropped their record down to 2-7. As for Villa Angela-St. Joseph, the win got them back to even at 5-5.

Benedictine will welcome John Marshall at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Villa Angela-St. Joseph, they will venture away from home to face off against Lake Catholic at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Villa Angela-St. Joseph has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
