The Caliche Buffaloes entered their tilt with the Weldon Valley Warriors with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. Caliche took down Weldon Valley 53-39 on Tuesday. Given Caliche's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 81st, while Weldon Valley is ranked 250th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading Caliche to victory were Ava Hernandez and Karsyn Huss. Hernandez scored 20 points, while Huss scored 19 points along with seven rebounds and three steals. That makes it three consecutive games in which Hernandez has scored at least 25% of Caliche's points. Ryann Svoboda was another key contributor, scoring four points along with seven rebounds.
Despite the defeat, Weldon Valley saw an underclassman step up: Skylar Scott scored 18 points. That's the first time this season that Scott scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaci Sanders, who scored seven points.
Caliche's victory bumped their record up to 6-1. As for Weldon Valley, their defeat was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 2-5.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Caliche will take on Sedgwick County at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Sedgwick County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 last Friday. As for Weldon Valley, they will be playing at home against Briggsdale at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
