The Southwood Knights were the 66-40 winner over the Whitko Wildcats when they last played one another back in January of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Southwood took a 55-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of Whitko on Wednesday. While losing is never fun, Southwood can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 308th, while Whitko is ranked 90th).
Despite the defeat, Southwood saw an underclassman step up: Hali Pershing dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Isabelle Ashba, who scored ten points along with five steals.
Whitko's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jayma Stonebraker led the charge by scoring 15 points along with five rebounds and four steals. Kloe Krieg was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with eight rebounds and three blocks.
This is the second loss in a row for Southwood and nudges their season record down to 6-13. As for Whitko, the victory was the tenth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 18-3.
Southwood won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Maconaquah at 7:45 p.m. on January 25th. Hopefully Maconaquah focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 27 last Thursday.
