Softball Recap: Staunton River Drops Highest Score of Season Against Tunstall

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Staunton River). They were the clear victors by a 16-2 margin over the Tunstall Trojans on Saturday. The result was nothing new for the Golden Eagles, who have now won five matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Kailynne Keister was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. That stolen base marked the first that she snagged this season.

In other batting news, Payton Chewning and Kaylee Maxfield did most of the damage at the plate: Chewning went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple, while Maxfield went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Maxfield has been hot recently, having posted three or more RBI the last three times she's played. Chloe Metric was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Staunton River was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .452. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .394 or higher in three consecutive games.

Staunton River pushed their record up to 5-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Tunstall, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-3.

Coming up, Staunton River will square off against Turner Ashby at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Tunstall, they will face off against Liberty at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
