5A District 8 recap Oct. 30, 2012
Harlan County was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after besting Bell County. The Black Bears came in at 25 in the state poll after placing at number 37 last week.
Harlan County extended the longest winning streak in 5A District 8 this week by beating the Bobcats, 40-34. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Perry County Central's dynamic duo of Austin Pray and Darryl Beatty proved tough for Somerset to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Pray threw for 176 yards and one touchdown and Beatty had 72 yards receiving. Nathan Pray helped Perry County Central's passing attack out by catching six balls for 70 yards.
Treyvon Long was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 99 yards on 11 carries as the Black Bears lost to the Briar Jumpers. Teammate Jake Middleton added to the ground attack by rushing for 87 yards.
Perry County Central's Pray and Pray have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Pray has thrown for 1809 yards this season, while Pray, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 39 catches for 737 yards. Harlan County's Middleton leads the league in rushing yards with 1757.
Justin Haddix's team's Pray is within 191 passing yards of surpassing 2,000 on the season coming into this week's game against Madison Southern.
The Black Bears and Bell County played the most hotly contested game in 5A District 8 this week, with the Black Bears eventually emerging with a 40-34 victory. Long caught one passes for 46 yards in the win.
