The Jefferson Mustangs will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the MacArthur Brahmas at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. The squads are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Jefferson has struggled recently with nine defeats in a row, while MacArthur will arrive with seven straight wins.
Jefferson's 25-8 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They were outmatched by Highlands at home and fell 55-24.
Meanwhile, everything came up roses for MacArthur on the road against Edison on Thursday as the squad secured a 44-15 victory. Given MacArthur's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 409th, while Edison is ranked 970th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
MacArthur got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Lyah Neira out in front who scored 20 points along with three steals. Neira continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. Anaya Whitby was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with nine rebounds and five steals.
Jefferson has not been sharp recently, as they've lost 12 of their last 13 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-18 record this season. As for MacArthur, they pushed their record up to 14-10 with that win, which was their fourth straight on the road.
Jefferson lost to MacArthur on the road by a decisive 61-43 margin in their previous meeting back in February. Can Jefferson avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
