St. Helens and Astoria are an even 4-4 against one another since April of 2023, but likely not for long. The Lions will face off against the Fishermen at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as St. Helens comes in on three and Astoria on seven.
On Thursday, St. Helens got the win against Seaside by a conclusive 19-3. Considering the Lions have won 12 contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Eme Curaming made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Madelyn Hancock was a standout: she fired off two home runs, four runs, and two stolen bases while going 3-for-3. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April. Halli Heys was another key player, going 2-for-5 with one home run, six RBI, and three runs.
St. Helens lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, Astoria faced Scappoose in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Fishermen sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-0 victory over the Indians.
Not much got past Maddie Wilkin, who gave up just four hits and racked up six Ks to keep Scappoose off the board.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Aryana Adams, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
St. Helens pushed their record up to 20-2 with the win, which was their seventh straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.9 runs on average over those games. As for Astoria, their record is now 17-4-1.
Both St. Helens and Astoria just can't seem to miss. The Lions have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.5 hits per game. However, it's not like Astoria struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 4.6 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
St. Helens skirted past Astoria 7-6 when the teams last played back in April. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lions since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
