Excelsior Charter hasn't had much luck against University Prep recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. Excelsior Charter will square off against University Prep at 3:15 p.m. Excelsior Charter is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.9 runs per game this season.
Excelsior Charter easily dispatched Academy of Careers & Exploration last Thursday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. Excelsior Charter fell just short of Granite Hills by a score of 11-9 on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Eagles have suffered against the Cougars since March 14, 2017.
Evangeline Archuleta made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3. Audie Nottingham was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, University Prep fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Duarte last Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Falcons by a score of 6-5.
Breezy (Briseis) Vargas spent all eight innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and two unearned) runs on 13 hits and racked up seven Ks. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April of 2024.
On the hitting side, Brie (Brieana) Villanueva was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run while going 3-for-4. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (three). Another player making a difference was Paityn Zimmerman, who scored a run while going 3-for-4.
Even though they lost, University Prep kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits in four consecutive contests.
Excelsior Charter's record now sits at 6-4-1. As for University Prep, their record is now 8-3.
Tuesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Excelsior Charter hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .379. However, it's not like University Prep struggles in that department as they've averaged .373. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Excelsior Charter came up short against University Prep in their previous meeting back in February, falling 9-4. Can Excelsior Charter avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
