Basketball Game Preview: Cape Fear Colts vs. Lumberton Pirates

Cape Fear is 6-1 against Lumberton since December of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Cape Fear Colts will welcome the Lumberton Pirates at 6:00 p.m. Cape Fear is coming into the matchup on a four-game losing streak.

Cape Fear is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They took a 79-68 hit to the loss column at the hands of South View on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Colts can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 299th, while the Tigers are ranked 29th).

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Shanel Sutton, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 12 boards. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 2.1 blocks per game. Another player making a difference was Elisabeth Kirkland, who posted 19 points along with eight assists and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Cape Fear smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 41 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Meanwhile, Lumberton was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Saturday as they fell 50-45 to St. Pauls. The Pirates have struggled against the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive lost matchup.

Cape Fear's loss dropped their record down to 5-7. As for Lumberton, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-8.
