After a string of five wins, The Ward Melville Patriots''s good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They fell to Sachem East 32-27. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Ward Melville came into the matchup with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' New York football rankings (they are ranked 116th, while Sachem East is ranked 273rd).
When it comes to explaining why Ward Melville lost, one person who can't be blamed is Ethan Burgos. Despite the final result, he rushed for 80 yards and four touchdowns on only 11 carries. Another player making a difference was Daniel Brausch, who rushed for 97 yards on only seven carries.
Ward Melville's defeat dropped their record down to 6-2. As for Sachem East, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season.
