Jay County is 8-1 against Southern Wells since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Patriots will venture away from home to take on the Raiders at 5:00 p.m. Jay County will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.
Jay County's tournament run continued when they took on Elwood on Saturday. The Patriots were the clear victors by a 15-5 margin over the Panthers. Considering the Patriots have won nine matches by more than nine runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Mallory Winner was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing six innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. Winner was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one triple and one RBI.
In other batting news, Jay County got a massive performance out of Jaelynn Lykins, who went 3-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. Natalie May also deserves some recognition as she launched her first home run of the season.
Jay County was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .457. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Elwood only posted a batting average of .231.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Southern Wells). They blew past Randolph Southern 15-4 on Monday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Raiders as it spelled an end to their nine-game losing streak.
Like Jay County, Southern Wells also got a great game from a two-way player: Kaylea Coffel. She tossed five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Coffel was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. That's the most hits she has posted over her last 11 contests.
In other batting news, Remi Holmes was a standout: she went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs she has posted over her last 11 games. Keely Miller was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one triple.
Jay County's record is now 14-2. As for Southern Wells, their record now sits at 2-16.
Southern Wells' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Jay County hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .436. It's a different story for Southern Wells, though, as they've only averaged .250. Will they be able to contain Jay County's hitters?
Jay County took their win against Southern Wells when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 10-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Patriots since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
