Video: Mayfield football highlights vs. Volcano Vista High School
See New Mexico's most dominant program in action last season.Look south if you want to find high school dominance in the Land of Enchantment.
Albuquerque and Las Cruces have their debates about who plays better football, and since MaxPreps became America's source for high school sports, it appears that Las Cruces has the bragging rights with the top two teams.
And let us not forget the areas of southeastern New Mexico as well. Teams from Arteisa and Roswell take up the next two spots before a northern-area team even appears on the list.
Many geographic areas of the state are featured on our list, with the northwest and southeast corners getting attention in addition to the major cities - and one city that sits in between ABQ and Las Cruces.
While larger schools dominate the top of the list, smaller schools find success thanks for state title game appearances. Lovington grabbed the final spot thanks to a stellar run in 3A and Aztec's success in 4A was enough to get it onto the list of great programs since 2006.
Here is how the points break down:
1. 20 for a state title
2. 10 for a state championship game appearance
3.
Other points are based on where a team finished in the final
MaxPreps New Mexico Football Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. For example, if a team finished No. 1 overall, it would receive
25 points. If it finished 25th overall, the team would get one point. No
points are awarded if the team did not finish in the Top 25.
