The Fike Demons fought the good fight in their overtime match against the Smithfield-Selma Spartans on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell to the Spartans 62-57. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Despite the loss, Fike still got an impressive performance from William Monk, who dropped a double-double on 23 points and 13 rebounds. That was a full 40.4% of Fike's points, marking the fourth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Dylan Skinner, who scored 14 points along with two steals.
Even though they lost, Fike smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Fike has not been sharp recently as the team has lost ten of their last 13 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-16 record this season. As for Smithfield-Selma, their victory ended a 19-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 3-17.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Fike won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Southern Wayne at 7:30 p.m. on February 13th. Hopefully Fike focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Monday. As for Smithfield-Selma, they won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against C.B. Aycock at 7:30 p.m. on February 13th. Smithfield-Selma is facing C.B. Aycock at the right time seeing as C.B. Aycock is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
