Two dominant signal callers in Savoy Nichols and Marlyn Smith are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The University Trojans will head out on the road to take on the Ellison Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Ellison will square off against a team with plenty of momentum: University extended their winning streak to four on Friday. The Trojans took their game with ease, bagging a 42-14 victory over Brenham. The result was nothing new for the Trojans, who have now won five contests by 24 points or more so far this season.
London Smith produced another solid performance picking up 171 receiving yards and three scores.
Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something University proved: they limited Brenham to a paltry 2.6 yards per carry. The team can thank Laquan Hughes Jr. for the heroic effort on defense: he. They're 1-2 when they shut down the run game so well.
University didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Rashad Smith and Jeremiah Green. Smith got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Ellison). They breezed past Rudder to the tune of 59-13 on Friday. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 382nd, while the Rangers are ranked 844th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.
University better keep an eye on Kae'Andre Sayles. He was instrumental in Ellison's win, picking up 212 receiving yards and three TDs. Those 212 receiving yards gave Sayles a new career-high. Prince Hall also helped out with an impressive 116 receiving yards.
University's record now sits at 6-3. As for Ellison, their record is now 4-5.
We should be in store for an exciting game as the two teams have no problem gaining yardage. University has been on an offensive roll this season, having averaged 399.3 total yards per game. However, it's not like Ellison struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 461 total yards. With a pair of commanding offenses duking it out, the defenses are going to have their work cut out for them.
University came out on top in a nail-biter against Ellison when the teams last played back in November of 2024, sneaking past 37-35. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Trojans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
