The Grimsley Whirlies will look to defend their home field on Friday against the North Mecklenburg Vikings at 7:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Grimsley put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past Northern Guilford 49-6 on the road. With Grimsley ahead 42-6 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Grimsley's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Mitchell Summers, who rushed for 167 yards and a touchdown while picking up 9.8 yards per carry, and Faizon Brandon, who threw for 196 yards and five touchdowns. Summers is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last four games he's played. Alex Taylor was another key contributor, gaining 68 total yards and a touchdown.
Grimsley's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB seven times. The heavy lifting was done by Jalen Ashe and Jahkai Eason who racked up five sacks between them.
Meanwhile, North Mecklenburg made easy work of West Charlotte on Friday and carried off a 34-8 win. The victory was all the more spectacular given North Mecklenburg's disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 82nd, while West Charlotte is ranked 20th).
North Mecklenburg's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Kelson Tate, who rushed for 32 yards and two touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaiah Mckee, who rushed for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Grimsley's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 10-0. As for North Mecklenburg, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 5-5 record this season.
