Wyoming East dropped their record down to 14-4 on Wednesday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They lost 13-7 to the Nicholas County Grizzlies. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Warriors, who until this game were averaging 3.94 runs allowed.
Zach Hunt put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he struck out seven batters over 4.1 innings while giving up three earned runs off three hits. Hunt was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Braxton Morgan was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That double was his first of the season. Owen Biggs was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one run.
As for Nicholas County, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-7 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games.
Like Wyoming East, Nicholas County also got a great game from a two-way player: Coleton Hellems. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Hellems was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Ira Mylott was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Nicholas County is undefeated when Mylott posts two or more runs, but 3-7 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Braden Brown, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Looking ahead, Wyoming East will head out to challenge Midland Trail at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Patriots have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.73 runs per game on average), something the Warriors will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Nicholas County, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Oak Hill at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
