It can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Freedom Area had no problem doing just that on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 8-7 victory over the Laurel Spartans. The win was familiar territory for the Bulldogs, who have now won four matchups in a row.
Xavier Robbins made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Freedom Area let Nick Fessler and Colton Blank run wild. Fessler went 2-for-4 with two runs and one double, while Blank went 2-for-4 with three RBI. That's the most hits Fessler has posted since back in March.
Freedom Area's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-7. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Laurel, they moved to 11-11 with that loss, which also ended their five-game winning streak.
As of now, neither Freedom Area nor the Spartans have any future games scheduled.
