Antioch has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will take on The Pittsburg Pirates at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, everything went Antioch's way against Deer Valley as Antioch made off with a 44-21 victory. 44 seems to be a good number for Antioch as the team scooped up a victory with the same number of points in their previous game.
It was another big night for Larenzo Mayfield, who rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 10.0 yards per carry, and also threw for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Mayfield is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last four games he's played. Antioch also got a significant boost from Curtis Tucker, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 112 yards.
Meanwhile, Pittsburg put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They blew past Liberty 34-13. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as Pittsburg just coasted through the last quarter.
Elijah Bow was his usual excellent self, rushing for 174 yards and two touchdowns. The team also got some help courtesy of Marley Alcantara, who threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns on only 14 passes.
Antioch's victory was their fifth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 7-2. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 1-8 Freedom and 3-6 Deer Valley (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 36.7% over those games). As for Pittsburg, their victory bumped their record up to 9-0.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Saturday's matchup: Antioch has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 237.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Pittsburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging 202.3 per game. It's looking like Saturday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Antioch was taken down by Pittsburg 55-22 when the teams last played back in November of 2022. Can Antioch avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
