Baseball Recap: Woodland's Losing Streak Snapped at Five Games

Woodland had lost five games straight , but after bumping their record up to 8-17 on Thursday that streak is in the rearview. They were the clear victors by a 9-3 margin over the Newkirk Tigers. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Cougars have posted against the Tigers since April 6, 2019.

Trey Bennett made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out 11 over six innings pitched. He is becoming a predictor of Woodland's success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is 2-1 (and 6-16 when he doesn't). Bennett was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. Those four RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Collin Brazee looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has become a key player for Woodland: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 6-16 otherwise.

Back at the plate, Patrick Freeman was excellent, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Woodland is undefeated when Freeman posts three or more hits, but 5-17 otherwise. Goob Kennedy was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

As for Newkirk, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 10-10-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss they have suffered against Woodland since April 6, 2019.

On Newkirk's side, Grady Wood was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Woodland has already played their next contest, a 14-0 victory against Yale on the 18th. As for Newkirk, they will be playing at home against Chisholm at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Tigers will need to watch out since the Longhorns have now posted at least ten runs in their last three games.
