The Fayetteville Lions will take on the Pettus Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Fayetteville focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 29 on Tuesday.
Fayetteville unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak. They took a 53-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of Round Top-Carmine.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Cambree Denham, who scored ten points along with six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kayme Schley, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 15 rebounds.
Meanwhile, Pettus stacked a 12th blowout win onto their ever-increasing hoard on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Non Varsity Opponent 63-32 at home. Winning may never get old, but Pettus sure is getting used to it with their fifth in a row.
Pettus' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Hayleigh Cruz, who scored 24 points along with two steals. That makes it six consecutive games in which Cruz has scored at least a third of Pettus' points. Another player making a difference was Carmen Cantu, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds.
Fayetteville's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 12-17. As for Pettus, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 21-10 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Fayetteville have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 33.4 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Pettus struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.3 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Fayetteville couldn't quite finish off Pettus in their previous meeting back in February of 2023 and fell 41-39. Can Fayetteville avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
