Melrose-Mindoro and Augusta are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2016, but likely not for long. The Mustangs will host the Beavers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Melrose-Mindoro's pitching crew has only allowed 2.8 runs per game this season, so Augusta's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Melrose-Mindoro had been on a four-game streak of scoring at least ten runs, but Pepin/Alma put an end to it on Tuesday. The Mustangs fell just short of Pepin/Alma by a score of 2-1. The game marked the Mustangs' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Melrose-Mindoro saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cooper Zeman, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, Augusta had to endure a four-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They never let Alma Center Lincoln get on the board and left with a 10-0 win on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Beavers, who have now won four matches by ten runs or more so far this season.
Brooklyn Krueger made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only one hit while striking out nine over six innings pitched. Krueger was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Rilee Bethke was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Cecelia Schroeder, who went 1-for-4 with three runs and one double.
Melrose-Mindoro's loss ended a six-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-2. As for Augusta, the victory got them back to even at 5-5.
Augusta's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Melrose-Mindoro hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .351. It's a different story for Augusta, though, as they've only averaged .244. Will they be able to contain Melrose-Mindoro's hitters?
Melrose-Mindoro took their win against Augusta in their previous meeting two weeks ago by a conclusive 13-2 score. Will the Mustangs repeat their success, or do the Beavers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
