Softball Recap: Sylmar Finds Home Field Redemption Against Van Nuys

There's no place like home for Sylmar, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Saturday. They blew past the Van Nuys Wolves 16-1 on Wednesday. The Spartans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four matchups by 13 runs or more this season.

Cynthia Valadez made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off seven hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances.

In other batting news, Maya Salceda was incredible, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four stolen bases, and seven RBI. What's more, she posted three runs, the most she's had since back in May of 2024. Viviana Cervacio was another key player, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI.

Sylmar was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .714. They are 4-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Sylmar pushed their record up to 4-7 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 18.0 runs over those games. As for Van Nuys, their loss dropped their record down to 4-7.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sylmar will venture away from home to face off against Monroe at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Van Nuys, they will head out to take on Grant at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The Wolves are facing the Lancers at the right time seeing as the Lancers are stuck on a six-game losing streak.
