Springport is 2-8 against Concord since January of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Springport Spartans will head out on the road to face off against the Concord Yellowjackets at 7:00 p.m. One thing working in Springport's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last three matches.
Springport pushed their score all the way to 56 on Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They fell 63-56 to Bronson. Springport found out winning isn't easy when you're outrebounded 15 to 6 on offense.
Despite their defeat, Springport saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Tucker Wiginton, who scored 18 points, was perhaps the best of all. Wiginton has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Braydon Hawes, who scored ten points along with five rebounds and two steals.
Meanwhile, Concord was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap last Saturday as they fell 54-48 to Gull Lake. It was the first time this season that Concord let down their fans at home.
Mekhi Wingfield put forth a good effort for the losing side as he dropped a double-double on 24 points and 12 rebounds. That was a full 50% of Concord's points, marking the third time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordan Medellin, who scored ten points.
Springport's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 7-3. As for Concord, their loss ended a five-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 6-4.
Wednesday's match is shaping up to be a scrappy game: Springport have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 33.5 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Concord, though, as they've been averaging only 27.9 rebounds per game. Given Springport's sizeable advantage in that area, Concord will need to find a way to close that gap.
Springport was taken down by Concord 71-37 in their previous meeting back in February of 2023. Thankfully for Springport, Anthony Evans (who scored 25 points along with six assists and two steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
