The Athens Golden Eagles won the last time they faced the Fort Payne Wildcats, and things went their way on Friday too. In a tight game that could have gone either way, Athens made off with a 29-28 win over Fort Payne. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Athens.
Leading Athens to victory were John Mcintyre and Brogan Gross. Mcintyre picked up 136 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Gross threw for 349 yards and three touchdowns. JayShon Ridgle did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 94 receiving yards.
Despite the loss, Fort Payne still got an impressive performance from Dax Varnadore, who threw for 262 yards and a touchdown.
Athens has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-2 record this season. As for Fort Payne, their loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-4.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens will take on Russellville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Alabama (Russellville is ranked 67th, while Athens is ranked 49th). As for Fort Payne, their homestand continues as they prepare to take on Mortimer Jordan at 7:00 p.m. on November 3rd.
