5A Midwestern recap Oct. 9, 2012
Mitch Reese and Jason Cook provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Willamette. The connection was good for 74 yards, the longest such play in 5A Midwestern this season.
Springfield extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Marshfield, 55-18. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Marist's dynamic duo of Kamerun Smith and Austin Baird proved tough for Eagle Point to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Smith threw for 273 yards and four touchdowns and Baird had 108 yards receiving. Austin Owen helped Marist's passing attack out by catching six balls for 85 yards.
Bryce York was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 160 yards on 17 carries as the Wolverines defeated the Eagles. Dante Giles also contributed to the rushing game with 100 yards on the ground.
Chad Gillam made the biggest impact on defense this week as North Eugene lost to Ashland. The 6-foot-0 junior forced one fumble and recorded one fumble.
Reese provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Churchill beat Willamette. He completed 14 passes for 257 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 93 yards. Reese's favorite target this week was Cook, who caught one pass for 74 yards.
Marist's Smith and Josh Harper have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 5A Midwestern in both passing and receiving yards. Smith has thrown for 1513 yards this season, while Harper, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 30 catches for 503 yards. Samuel Aguirre from Dan Fritz's team leads the league in rushing with 693 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Frank Geske's team takes on the Lancers. The Spartans are in second place, while Churchill is in third place.
There should be lots of points scored when Marist and Darrell Mehl's team face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Spartans comes in having scored 265 this season, while the Lancers have scored 241. Marist scored 47 points last week as it topped Eagle Point.
Churchill and the Wolverines played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Churchill eventually emerging with a 29-26 victory. Reese in the win.
