Long Beach Poly and Lakewood are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The two teams, after both having extra time off, will shake off the rust and duke it out at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Long Beach Poly is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.6 runs per game this season.
Pacifica hit Long Beach Poly with a five-run third inning last Wednesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Jackrabbits came up short against the Mariners, falling 13-6. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Jackrabbits, who until this game were averaging 3.18 runs allowed.
Bailey Holder and Persjah Lam Sam did some serious damage despite the final result: Holder went 2-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Lam Sam went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Emoni Lam Sam was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Lakewood won against Compton back in March with 12 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again last Wednesday. The Lancers put the hurt on Woodrow Wilson with a sharp 12-2 win. The result was nothing new for the Lancers, who have now won six matchups by seven runs or more so far this season.
Bella Polanco made a big impact no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. Those six strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base. That stolen base was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Lakewood let Katelynn Lewis and Jamie Ramirez run wild. Lewis went 4-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, and one triple, while Ramirez went 4-for-5 with four RBI and one run. Those two doubles gave Lewis a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaszee Childress, who went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
Lakewood kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive contests.
Lakewood pushed their record up to 10-10 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.0 runs over those games. As for Long Beach Poly, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-3 record this season.
Lakewood's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Long Beach Poly has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.5 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Lakewood, though, as they've been averaging only 2.5 strikeouts. Will Long Beach Poly keep running through batters, or will the Lancers buck the trend?
Everything went Long Beach Poly's way against Lakewood in their previous meeting back in March, as Long Beach Poly made off with a 10-0 victory. Do the Jackrabbits have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Lancers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
