The Geneva Eagles will head out on the road to square off against the Hawken Hawks at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Geneva has nine straight wins, Hawken has six straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Last Saturday, Geneva earned a 54-45 win over Madison. That's two games straight that Geneva has won by exactly nine points.
Hawken suffered their biggest loss since December 8, 2023 on Sunday. They had to suffer through a rough 55-25 loss at the hands of Berea-Midpark. While losing is never fun, Hawken can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 723rd, while Berea-Midpark is ranked 357th).
Hawken's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Sarah Liu, who scored 11 points along with six rebounds, and Julia Scales who scored ten points along with eight rebounds and two blocks. That was a full 40% of Hawken's points, marking the ninth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Hawken struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. They are winless (0-3) when they can't control their own glass like that.
Geneva's victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-2. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 53.9 points per game. As for Hawken, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-10.
Things could have been worse for Geneva, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 53-37 loss to Hawken in their previous meeting back in January of 2023. Can Geneva avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
