Garfield is 6-0 against Memorial since December of 2021, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Monday. The Garfield G-Men will be playing in front of their home fans against the Memorial Red Devils at 6:15 p.m. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Garfield suffered their biggest defeat since December 11, 2023 on Thursday. They ended up on the wrong side of a rough 54-32 walloping at the hands of Champion. Garfield was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 47-9.
Despite their defeat, Garfield saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Mandy Cardinal, who scored 16 points along with eight rebounds and two steals, was perhaps the best of all. Cardinal has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last five times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Charlee Hill, who scored eight points.
Meanwhile, Memorial's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They had to suffer through a rough 64-13 loss at the hands of Crestview. While losing is never fun, Memorial can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 774th, while Crestview is ranked 119th).
Angeliz Diaz was Memorial's leading scorer, having posted eight points.
Yaleiska Diaz held things down on the boards with seven rebounds. She took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with an assist.
Garfield has been struggling recently, as they've lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-11 record this season. As for Memorial, they bumped their record down to 2-11 with that defeat, which was their third straight at home.
Monday's match is shaping up to be a scrappy game: Garfield have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 28.3 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Memorial, though, as they've been averaging only 27.3 rebounds per game. Given Garfield's sizeable advantage in that area, Memorial will need to find a way to close that gap.
Garfield strolled past Memorial in their previous meeting back in December of 2023 by a score of 37-18. Does Garfield have another victory up their sleeve, or will Memorial turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
