Petal and Sumrall are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Panthers will venture away from home to square off against the Bobcats at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Petal is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.1 runs per game this season.
Petal is probably headed into the game with a chip on their shoulder considering Baker just ended the team's four-game winning streak on Saturday. They took a 7-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Hornets.
Jaley Weathersby was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: she didn't allow a single earned run over 4.2 innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.
At the plate, Petal saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Dylan Pearce, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI. Lili Byrd also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Sumrall posted their closest win since April 10, 2025 on Tuesday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against St. Patrick, sneaking past 3-2. The three-run effort marked the Bobcats' lowest-scoring matchup of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.
Emma Pope spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on two hits.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Ella Robertson, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April of 2025.
The victory was the third in a row for Sumrall, bringing their record up to 5-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Petal, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-3.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Petal has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .453. However, it's not like Sumrall struggles in that department as they've averaged .457. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Petal skirted past Sumrall 9-7 in their previous matchup two weeks ago. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Panthers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
