Basketball Recap: Rio Grande's Losing Streak Is a Thing of the Past

Rio Grande had to endure a 16-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They enjoyed a cozy 47-32 victory over the Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars on Tuesday. This was a revenge game for the Ravens: when they faced off against the Jaguars back in January, they had to take a 57-31 defeat.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Rio Grande to victory, but perhaps none more so than Riley Starks, who posted 17 points and six boards. That's the most rebounds Starks has posted since back in February of 2024. Stefani Garrison also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assist of the season.

Rio Grande smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Atrisco Heritage Academy only pulled down ten offensive rebounds.

Atrisco Heritage Academy lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Selim Neel, who earned 12 points and three steals. Neel is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games she's played. Another player making a difference was Lalany Sanchez, who put up six points and seven boards.

Rio Grande's win ended a seven-game drought at home and bumped them up to 2-16. As for Atrisco Heritage Academy, they dropped their record down to 2-18 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road.

Rio Grande wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 52-19 defeat against Albuquerque on the 30th. Atrisco Heritage Academy has also already played their next game, a 57-44 loss against West Mesa on the 31st.
