Video: Stat Stars (Sept. 11-18)After only five 700-yard passing performances in high school history, there have now been two in the past two weeks.
Mario Armendarez of Washington (Phoenix) is the latest to be added to the list, as he threw for 756 yards in a 96-74 loss to Agua Fria (Avondale, Ariz.) on Friday. Armendarez's 756 yards, and 10 touchdowns, are both state records. The 756 yards rank fourth all-time in high school history and the performance came one week after Matt Miller of DuBois (Pa.) threw for 787 yards in a 107-90 loss.
Armendarez is one of three passers this week to throw for over 600 yards. Prior to 2010, only 20 quarterbacks had thrown for over 600 yards in a single game. Since 2010, there have been 50, including seven this year.
Omar Salih of Chavez Academy (Detroit) threw for 615 yards and eight touchdowns in a 68-22 win over Cardinal Mooney Catholic (Marine City, Mich.) and has eclipsed the 600-yard barrier twice in his career. As a sophomore, Salih threw for a state-record 674 yards.
Layne Hatcher of Pulaski Academy (Little Rock, Ark.) had 600 yards and eight touchdowns in a 71-40 win over Warren (Ark.). Hatcher, a sophomore, is the latest in a long line of prolific quarterbacks at Pulaski Academy, however, he is just the second to throw for over 600 yards in a game. Will Hefley, whom Hatcher succeeded at quarterback, threw for 611 yards in 2013.
Following are the top performances in the nation as reported by the players' coaches.
