Baseball Recap: Manchester Picks Up Eighth Straight Win at Home

Manchester came tearing into Saturday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Fairfield Lions as they made off with a 13-3 win. Considering the Greyhounds have won eight games by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Thomas Barnhart was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off three hits. He has been consistent: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Parker Hayslip, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Clayton Colvin, who went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Manchester always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .583. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Fairfield only posted an OBP of .391.

Manchester pushed their record up to 11-4 with the victory, which was their eighth straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Fairfield, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-9 record this season.

Manchester will take on Batavia at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Greyhounds 3.7, the Bulldogs 3) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Fairfield, they will be taking part in a tournament against St. Joseph Central at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
