Basketball Recap: Aurora West College Prep Academy's Losing Streak Snapped at 30 Games

Aurora West College Prep Academy had lost 30 straight headed into Wednesday's matchup, but Maria Gutierrez Benitez didn't let it get to 31. Everything went the Aurora West College Prep Academy Spartans' way against the Poudre Community Academy Warriors on Wednesday as the Aurora West College Prep Academy Spartans made off with a 49-23 win thanks in part to Gutierrez Benitez, who shot 5-for-9 from long range and dropped a double-double on 21 points and 20 boards. Gutierrez Benitez is also crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season.

Another player making a difference was Setou Sy, who posted eight points and 11 rebounds. Those 11 boards gave her a new career-high.

Poudre Community Academy's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Breckyn Jones, who scored 18 points along with five rebounds and three steals. That was a full 78.3% of Poudre Community Academy's points, marking the third time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. Hayden Belmont was another key player, putting up two points in addition to 11 blocks and eight boards.

Aurora West College Prep Academy's victory ended an 18-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-9. As for Poudre Community Academy, their defeat was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Aurora West College Prep Academy will challenge Ascent Classical Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Poudre Community Academy, they will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Twin Peaks Classical Academy at 5:00 p.m. on January 29th.
