Last Wednesday, Newport was fully in charge, breezing past the Tigers 80-41 at home. With Newport ahead 43-16 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Newport got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Jabari Covington out in front who scored 23 points along with three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Covington has scored all season. Dashawn Anderson was another key contributor, scoring 20 points along with two steals.
Meanwhile, Newport Central Catholic was the victim of a rough 56-34 defeat at the hands of the Fighting Crusaders on Saturday. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Newport Central Catholic has scored all season.
Newport is on a roll lately: they've won 15 of their last 16 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 22-3 record this season. As for Newport Central Catholic, they dropped their record down to 7-16 with that defeat, which was their third straight on the road.
Newport took their win against the Thoroughbreds when the teams last played back in January by a conclusive 75-55. Will Newport repeat their success, or do the Thoroughbreds have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
