Two dominant backs in Tyler Cunningham and Tyson Alvarado are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Templeton Eagles will host the Coalinga Horned Toads at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Templeton sitting on nine straight victories and Coalinga on six.
Two weeks ago, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Templeton beat Cabrillo 29-23. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Eagles' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 130th, while the Conquistadores are ranked 429th).
It was another big night for Colby Sims, who picked up 101 receiving yards and one TD.
Another reason for the win was Templeton's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Nick Capaci, Weston Patch, and Wyatt Botts, who each picked up one sack apiece.
Meanwhile, it can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Coalinga had no problem doing just that on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 30-15 win over the Marauders.
Coalinga found their leader in sophomore Alvarado, who rushed for 107 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only 13 carries.
Templeton's victory bumped their record up to 9-1. As for Coalinga, their win bumped their record up to 9-2.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground. Templeton has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 180.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Coalinga struggles in that department as they've been averaging 185.3 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Everything came up roses for Templeton against Coalinga when the teams last played back in September, as the squad secured a 47-14 victory. In that game, the Eagles amassed a halftime lead of 34-14, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
