The Winthrop College Prep Academy Spartans pushed their score all the way to 60 on Friday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 68-60 hit to the loss column at the hands of Academy of the Holy Names. While losing is never fun, Winthrop College Prep Academy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 332nd, while Academy of the Holy Names is ranked 76th).
Despite the defeat, Winthrop College Prep Academy had strong showings from Zamyria King, who scored 31 points, and JoLesa Birkhead, who scored 21 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points King has scored all season.
Academy of the Holy Names' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Grace Gavin led the charge by scoring 22 points along with five rebounds and four blocks. Gavin hasn't dropped below two steals for three straight games. Another player making a difference was Lucy Morey, who scored 20 points along with two steals.
This is the second loss in a row for Winthrop College Prep Academy and nudges their season record down to 10-12. As for Academy of the Holy Names, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 16-7.
Winthrop College Prep Academy will look to defend their home court on Monday against Families Instructing Students HomeSchool at 7:30 p.m. Families Instructing Students HomeSchool is no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses. As for Academy of the Holy Names, they will head out on the road to square off against Parrish Community at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Parrish Community has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 182 points over their last three contests.
